Project Details

Affordable Solar worked diligently with Kroger Company’s Fry’s division to design, supply and construct a solar canopy superstructure that spans and shades over 2 acres of customer parking area in front of Fry’s Marketplace.

Per Fry’s request, the following objectives had to be met: (1) the structure had to feel open and airy and not block the view of the storefront; (2) the structure had to aesthetically blend with the store building and the overall surroundings; (3) the design had to minimize the visibility of electrical components such as conduit, wiring, combiner boxes and inverters in order to give the project an uncluttered look and feel; (4) the project had to deliver the most value in terms of the energy cost offset as well as the sales uptick due to shaded parking for customers; and (5) the 30-foot tall canopy had to be constructed safely and as quickly as possible while maximizing the parking available to customers during construction. Additionally, the City of Goodyear required the solar canopy design to be architecturally and aesthetically aligned with near by buildings and structures. Affordable Solar’s design-build team met all of these objectives and requirements while keeping the project on-budget.

The solar canopy system consists of a 30-foot clear, steel structure with large spans between supporting columns. The steel canopy supports a solar array consisting of 3,520 Hyundai 325W DC photovoltaic modules serving the dual function of turning sunlight into electricity and shading 2 acres of parking area. The PV array feeds DC electricity to 22 Solectria 36kW AC inverters and 2 Solectria 28kW AC inverters for a total power output capacity 848 kW AC. The system is interconnected with the Arizona Public Service electric grid and will generate over 2 Million kilowatt- hours of clean energy annually. For comparison, this would be enough energy to power over 150 average homes in Arizona. The project demonstrates Fry’s continued commitment towards incorporating renewable energy at its stores while delivering the much desired shading to its customers under the hot Arizona sun.
