Project Details

Affordable Solar designed, supplied, and constructed the largest-to-date as of January 2015 and the 4th solar electric system for The Kroger Co. The new 1.2 MW DC (993.6kW AC), rooftop solar system is located on the Kroger-Smith’s distribution center in Layton, Utah. Affordable Solar coordinated its work closely with Kroger’s Logistics Engineering and with the facility’s management staff to ensure that installation activities did not disrupt the complex operations of the distribution and manufacturing facility. The solar project was completed under a tight schedule with the mechanical installation of the 1.2MW PV array taking only 6 days. Solar racking and modules were distributed across the roof and installed as they were craned up in order to prevent excessive point loads on the roof.

The solar system consists of 4,066 Trina Solar 295W polycrystalline modules, model TSM-295-PD14, mounted on the roof using the non-penetrating Unirac RM system. The photovoltaic array feeds 36 ABB TRIO 27.6kW AC, roof-mounted inverters, for a total output capacity of 993.6 kW AC. The solar system will generate approximately 1,800,000 kWh of clean electricity annually. The PV system is interconnected to PacifiCorp’s Rocky Mountain Power grid and demonstrates Kroger’s -and its Smith’s division- continuing commitment to the well-being of the communities they serve by promoting energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

The Kroger Layton solar system:

• Will generate approximately 1,800,000 kWh of clean electricity annually and locally, equivalent to powering 200 average homes
• Will offset approximately 1340 tons of CO2 annually
